Ethylene Propylene Rubber (EPR / EPDM)
  • Ethylene Propylene Rubber
    (EPR / EPDM)

Ethylene Propylene Rubber is also commonly referred to as EPR or EPDM. It is widely used in a large number of industrial sealing applications.

EPDM / EPR compounds provide excellent resistance to ozone, weathering, hot and cold water and also steam. EPDM / EPR also shows resistance to Skydrol™ and other phosphate-ester hydraulic fluids commonly used in aircraft hydraulics, while also providing resistance to certain automotive brake fluids. It is also a useful sealing material for use in alcohols, glycols, silicone oils, weak acids, alkali and Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK).

    Caution utilising Ethylene Propylene Rubber

Caution must be taken when utilising EPDM / EPR compounds as they are not considered compatible with hydrocarbon fuels or synthetic and mineral lubricants.

When using EPDM / EPR materials in sealing applications they should never be lubricated or come into contact with petroleum based lubricants or greases as the material will suffer from excessive volume swell which could seriously affect the sealing ability of the product in use. Any test-rig used for hydraulic cylinder pressure testing must also follow this rule and only use fluids compatible with EPDM / EPR.
