Fluorocarbon Rubber
(FPM / FKM / VITON™)Fluorocarbon elastomers are commonly referred to as Viton®, FKM and FPM. They are highly fluorinated carbon-based polymers which were developed to provide a material with outstanding physical and mechanical properties when subjected to harsh chemicals and elevated temperatures. Viton® was the original Fluorocarbon elastomer and became a significant material for the sealing industry in the late 1950s, when it was introduced for high performance applications in the aerospace industry by Du-Pont™.
Used in the most demanding applicationsOver the years, fluorocarbon elastomers (FPM / FKM / Viton®) have advanced significantly and are now available in a number of compounds to help satisfy the most arduous of applications. The elevated temperature capability and chemical resistance of the material is provided by the bulk of the fluorine atoms which shield the polymer backbone and fluorine-carbon bond from attack.
In general terms, the higher the fluorine content the compound contains, the greater the chemical resistance will be. However, an increased fluorine content will have a direct impact on the material's low temperature flexibility.
M Seals offers a broad portfolio of high quality fluorocarbon elastomers (FPM / FKM / Viton®) to cope with the most demanding applications, operating in temperatures from -40°C to + 210°C. Our materials are offered in a number of colours and shore hardness choices.
