Engineered static seals
  • Machined Static Seals

Static seals are used where both the seal and the mating hardware do not move relative to one another in the application being sealed. Static seals can either seal radially on the inside and outside diameters of the seal or axially on the side walls of the seal, with the latter commonly referred to as a face seal. O-rings are still the most common and reliable static sealing solution, but they do not always provide the necessary attributes to work in every application.

Back-up rings or anti-extrusion rings, as their name suggests, are not sealing devices but purely a device to provide ‘back-up’ protection and support to sealing elements, typically O-rings. Back-up rings are generally manufactured from extrusion resistant materials which are normally harder than the seal they are protecting. They are positioned between the sealing device and the clearance/extrusion gap in a sealing application to provide protection from extrusion under pressure and to prevent possible seal damage. In most circumstances, the pressure rating, temperature resistance and life expectancy of a sealing element can be vastly increased using the correct choice of back-up ring design, material and size. We suggest the use of a back-up ring device in all applications, where possible, to help prolong seal life expectancy.

M Seals has a wide range of static sealing and anti-extrusion / back-up ring profiles in a number of our high performance materials to work in the most arduous applications. Whether it be high-pressures, high or low temperatures, aggressive chemicals or seals that require a high degree of deflection for hardware separation, we have the solution.

  • IMPORTANT - Please Note: The data shown below are maximum values and operating ranges and cannot be used at the same time.

For example: The maximum operating speed will depend on material type chosen, working pressure, application temperature and clearance gap values.  The temperature range shown is also dependent on choice of material and media to be sealed.

KB20-FS is a compact double acting face seal designed for both low and high-pressure heavy-duty static applications. The seal comprises a T-shaped sealing element with pressure activated anti-extrusion rings / back-up rings.

The seal is manufactured to fit centred in the seal groove and have a high degree of gland fill. The seal also has two anti-extrusion rings to ensure the sealing element is protected from extrusion when hardware clearances are large or pressures are high. The anti-extrusion rings can be manufactured from several durable materials allowing a superior resistance to extrusion.

Due to the high gland-fill of this seal, it is useful for high-pressure gas applications when produced in one of our RGD resistant elastomers.

The KB20-FS can be manufactured to suit most internationally recognised O-Ring grooves in both metric and imperial sizes as well as non-standard sizes.

KB20A-EFS is a compact single acting external pressure face seal designed for both low and high-pressure static applications.

The seal comprises a P-shaped sealing element with pressure activated anti-extrusion ring / back-up ring and is manufactured to fit tight against the inside diameter of the seal groove. The seal also has an anti-extrusion ring to ensure the sealing element is protected from extrusion when hardware clearances are large or pressures are high. The anti-extrusion rings can be manufactured from several durable materials allowing a superior resistance to extrusion.

The simple O-Ring is one of the oldest and most trusted static sealing methods available.

M Seals can manufacture O-Rings ‘flash-free’ on the outside and inside diameter contact points helping to provide leak-free performance in radial sealing applications.

We manufacture Rubber O-Rings, Polyurethane O-Rings, PTFE O-Rings and O-Rings for rapid gas decompression resistance in one of our Norsok compliant RGD / ED resistant materials.

    Temperature
     Min: -50 °C Max: 210 °C

Our RB14 is a simple square section or rectangular profile used for economical sealing of SAE flanges for both internal and external pressure (confirmation of the pressure direction is required). It provides good low-pressure sealing efficiency up to 100 Bar which can be increased through the correct choice of back-up ring.

While being economical it isn’t the most robust seal for flange sealing, talk to our technical department about the best choice of seal for your application.

    Temperature
     Min: -55 °C Max: 210 °C
    Speed
     Max: - m/s

SS01 profile is a static O-Ring and Back-up Ring replacement seal. It is used where the installation of 2 back-up rings and an O-Ring are problematic and time consuming. The tapered sealing points allow easier installation into the mating hardware and the dual contact points offer a degree of sealing redundancy. It has excellent resistance to pulsating pressures and does not roll or twist in the groove due its excellent stability.

Commonly used on cartridge valves up to 400 Bar and higher through the correct choice of polyurethane material, it is an economical choice where O-Rings are routinely damaged at the installation stage and a more stable abrasion and tear resistant seal is required

    Speed
     Max: - m/s

XB74 profile is a unique type of seal commonly used as a cost-effective way to pressure test API ring joints without damaging the mating 23° flanges or using a standard metallic seal.

Our XB74 seal is manufactured here at M Seals and used by OEM clients all over the world with great success. This seal has also been independently pressure tested through 10 two-minute cycles at 700 Bar (10,000 PSI) in our most popular HPU-R95 polyurethane seal material without issue and has also been re-used by clients up to 30 times without failure.

The unique shape of the seal provides a good interference fit within the hardware across its circumference which helps provide good static sealing and prevent it from tilting or moving while being tested. The sealing lips sit nicely under compression against the 23° flange side walls and the profiled internal groove allows the seal to be further actuated/energised by the system pressure, helping to provide a leak tight system
