Engineered Piston seals
  • Machined Piston Seals

Piston seals are typically double acting/bi-directional but can also be provided in a single acting/uni-directional configuration if the application demands. Piston seals are typically installed onto the piston, which can be either a solid or split design. These seals create a static seal along the internal diameter of the piston and provide both static and dynamic sealing against the cylinder wall or bore in a hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder.

The main purpose of a piston seal is to prevent fluid media escaping across the piston head into the opposing chamber. By sealing against the cylinder wall, a pressure build up is produced on one side of the piston head, which in turn makes the cylinder extend or retract according to the wishes of the machine user. The correct choice of piston seal is an important factor when designing or repairing a hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder.

M Seals offers a wide range of high performance piston seals and can engineer a solution for the most arduous of applications. We can provide you with engineered sealing solutions for applications involving high pressure, low pressure, high speed, high temperature and extreme low temperature. When our piston seals are combined with the correct range of wiper seals, guide rings and rod seals, you can be assured of a leak free, long life performance.

Profile KB11 is the intermediate chevron packing ring from our KB112 profile. It can be used individually in certain circumstances where the profiled female support ring may already be profiled as part of the metallic hardware. The KB112 chevron packing set is an old and trusted sealing solution for piston applications.

The special design of this set provides automatic pre-load which means the engineer doesn’t have to make manual adjustments to the seal gland which is common when using rubber & fabric packing sets.

The intermediate V-ring/s are stacked on top of each other to provide redundant sealing capability which is useful when the primary seal fails. The choice of too many V-rings though can see the packing set ‘burnout’ through increased friction; we recommend 1 ring for piston applications and a maximum of 2. If more rings are necessary then our KB112B profile should be utilised in one of our high performance internally lubricated Polyurethanes.

The female header ring is normally manufactured from a common engineering plastic or hard grade Polyurethane to provide extrusion resistance and to provide stability in the gland. The force of the system pressure into the primary male pressure ring increases sealing force by ensuring that the V-rings are energised and further activated under pressure.

The KB112B chevron packing set has been specifically modified to improve the frictional footprint of the intermediate sealing V’s. A simple lubrication reservoir has been added into the side wall of the sealing element to aid lubrication in long stroke or high-frequency applications.

The design of this set provides automatic pre-load which means the engineer doesn’t have to make manual adjustments to the seal gland or crush the seal which is common when using older rubber & fabric packing sets.

The intermediate V-rings can be stacked on top of each other to provide redundant sealing capability which is useful when the primary seal fails. We recommend a maximum of 2 sealing rings, but up to 4 can be used with this profile, but we suggest that the seal be manufactured in one of our high performance internally lubricated Polyurethanes to help prevent stick-slip caused.

The KB14 seal is a special spring energised seals primarily intended for dynamic applications where reciprocating or moderate rotating movement is present. The P14 is used in applications where a standard cross section of seal cannot be used or where the seal requires an in-built stand-off ring to avoid crushing under potential back-pressure build up.

It can be used in applications where large gland tolerances exist or where there is a need for higher deflection due to expansion caused by high pressure duty. The seal is commonly used in foundries in place of standard rubber and fabric chevron seals where fluid compatibility is an issue or where extreme high temperature is present.

The seal consists of a U-shaped jacket and 2 cantilever springs which are available in 301 Stainless steel, Hastelloy® C-276 and Elgiloy® as standard. The cantilever spring design offers a moderate load versus deflection which is suitable for most applications. The design of the cantilever spring places the spring load at the front of the sealing lip making the KB14 seal an excellent option should a scraper lip be required for abrasive media sealing or scraping
